The Unique Challenges of Managing Pests in BC during the Fall

The summer months are getting sunnier year after year and, depending on whether you're on the coast or in the interior, the falls are as wet as ever. With the end of summer and the beginning of fall in BC comes some special and unique challenges when confronting pests in your home. 

Burrowing Begins 

As cooler weather approaches, small mammals and insects move into your home to avoid the cold. The wet environment of BC, combined with fall’s shorter daylight hours, provides a supportive habitat for bugs that live in cool, damp, and dark places. This includes silverfish, carpet beetles, black widows, and brown recluse spiders. Insects like silverfish and carpet beetles may live in high-moisture places inside your home, such as between a damp wall and the baseboard, or in a damp carpet seam. They damage carpet and plaster. Black widow and brown recluse spiders like to find dark, damp places to make their nests. Areas such as garden sheds, underneath patio steps, or particularly neglected corners of a garage or basement, are prime real estate for these dangerous, poisonous arachnids.

Rats and mice become an issue as the cooler months approach and the rains return. These tiny mammals can chew through most household building materials to make their nests in between walls, in crawlspaces, and in subfloors. In addition to damaging the areas that they chew through, rats and mice, particularly in urban environments, may carry diseases. Rat and mice droppings often carry diseases and can pose health hazards if allowed to accumulate.
